Gelcoat Refurbishing / Renewal Pictures

Gelcoat refurbishing, also called gelcoat renewal or gelcoat rejuvenation, is a unique service where a gelcoat specialist is able to remove chalky/faded gelcoat (by hand) to bring back the original factory finish and lustre. Oftentimes we also have to repair scratches, gouges or other blemishes in the refurbishing process - gelcoat is custom color matched to the restored finish and not the chalky/faded finish. Metalflake finishes cannot be refurbished. Not all boats are candidates for this service, but we offer options for boats that have gelcoat beyond repair. Buffing/waxing and exterior detailing does not refurbish gelcoat.

There are numerous manufacturers that now incorporate faded or ombre metalflake finishes that merge multiple colors. LandCraft's highly skilled technicians are well versed in all forms of metalflake repair and we have repaired metalflake boats with scratches, gouges and other forms of cosmetic and structural damage.

Structural Damage Repair Pictures

A LandCraft® specialty is structural fiberglass repair. We repair the most severely damaged boats including those with impact damage from boat collisions, breakwall impact, wing dam impact, rock/bottom impact and other forms of grounding. Our team also repairs boats with factory damage - voids, stress cracks, and other structural or cosmetic issues. It is common for us to see boats damaged from transport which includes road debris, trailer tire blowouts, rear-end collisions, and various other causes. We also repair stringers, bulkheads and transoms.

Charter Boat Major Structural Repair
Major structural work was required to access and replace an interior water tank on a commercial vessel, and then restore fiberglass and gelcoat to exceed manufacturer standards. U.S. Coast Guard monitored and approved repair procedures—a requirement on commercial passenger vessel repairs.
Collision Impact Damage Structural Repair
This 27' Crownline sustained major structural damage when another vessel collided with it. We removed the damaged and delaminated core, then rebuilt, shaped and 2-tone gelcoat refinished the repaired area. The windshield frame was also damaged in the accident, and since Taylor Made rarely has windshield frames available we custom fabricated the frame with the incorrect piece sent by Taylor Made. Talk about custom work! We also refurbished the exterior of the boat and added more modern Crownline 270 decals.

Commercial Passenger Vessel Repairs
The U.S. Coast Guard recommended LandCraft® to repair extensive structural damage on (3) Sea Dog commercial passenger vessels. Vessel #3 was brought to Chicago from the East coast for LandCraft® to perform correct structural repairs after the failure of a previous repair done on the East coast. We worked inside all 3 vessels and performed labor intensive structural repairs in accordance with Federal standards. Our repair procedures and repair work was U.S. Coast Guard monitored and approved—a requirement on commercial passenger vessel repairs.

    In the lay-up of fiberglass in the boat build process, a defect known as a void can occur. The particular void defects that we repaired left an air pocket in the structure that had to be opened and structurally repaired.

    A Boston Whaler sustained extensive storm damage caused by grounding on rocks. While in for structural repairs to the bottom hull we created a custom fiberglass inlet and then also addressed issues on the aged top deck, added a new rubrail and graphics.
